The weirdest thing happened to us today…
I was out the front gardening and all of a sudden the kids come out to see me yelling:
“Muuuuuum!! Bella’s come home, Bella’s come home!!!!!!”…
I was like… “No she hasn’t, what are you talking about!?”
then Mr Flutter came into the lounge and motioned to me “Kat, come here and look…”

Being the good wife that I am, (who follow’s her husband’s every instruction!) I ignored him and went back to my gardening…
Well, low and behold but out he comes carrying our kitten Bella
(Who we rehomed to another family a whole month ago!!!!)…

“Don’t be silly, it’s not Bella” says I to my family…
“It must be just one of the neighbours cats that looks an awful lot like Bella”…
** pause ** head tilt
“But then again…
She does look an awful lot like Bella doesn’t she…”

“But it IS Bella” says Hannah adamantly…

Neil then put her down and off she trots inside, gives our dog Izzy a big kiss on the nose (they are besties) and heads off down to the laundry cupboard where we used to keep her food.
After watching the fact that Izzy did not chase her away, like she would a neighbours cat, then watch her paw the cupboard, sit and look at me expectantly and paw the cupboard again I could not deny any longer that this was indeed our kitty Bella come back to us…
Oh my!

The weirdest thing just happened... Our cat (who we thought we had rehomed a month ago with all her things!!!) just walked in the door and settled down as if she still lives here... What the hell?! I can't believe the people that took her would do that!!
Within half an hour of returning back to us, there she was in her favourite spot by the window…

So, we’ve no idea what happened!
I tried to get in touch with her new owners and whoever answered told me I had the wrong number. –Which it may well of been, but I suspect not.

It is possible that she found her way back to us, but considering the new owners told me they lived in a suburb 30 minutes drive from us then I find that incredibly unlikely.
Especially as she looks well, not like she’s just had a big journey.
Instead we suspect that they dumped her back to us overnight.

I have to say that is devastating and completely shocking to us!!
– Bella is such a gentle and affectionate kitty, and they did seem like nice people, so I have no idea what happened.
If that is the case and they dumped her back to us without a word, then I absolutely can’t believe how bad manners that is. Not only did we give them a lot of stuff along with her, but had they told us that she wasn’t fitting in for whatever reason then we would have taken her back in a heart beat to try rehoming again ourselves.
Even dropping her back with a note (and her things) would have been a start!!!
I guess it just goes to show you never can tell a person by your first meeting of them.

Best friends together again ❤❤
Best friends back together…

So, as you can tell we are all a little shell shocked to have her back.
Thrilled to bits, but shocked.
And I now really feel for my girls…
They were both absolutely heartbroken when she had to go. (So of course was I!)
Even just this week Abbie has come to my crying “I miiiissss Bella, I waaant Bella” multiple times – a full month later!
But never the less we will enjoy her while we have her, ponder for a few days, and decide what to do from here…

Unaware of all the confusion and angst she has caused, Miss Bella is acting like she never left…
As soon as she had given us all a cuddle and had something to eat, off she went to her old favourite spot in our bedroom and slept away the day.
She’s been totally relaxed since then, and back into all her old habits.
How bizarre indeed…

** Edited to add that we have had to make the hard choice to rehome Bella because when we get to NZ we will be living with my parents for a yet-to-be-determined time period while we sell our house and make sure we are certain about the move. They already have 3 cats and have put their foot down that we can’t bring her with us. Not to mention the cost. So that is why we regret to find her a new home…

  1. Oh how loving and heartbreaking all at the same time. I wish I was even in the same country – she seems like such a dear kitty… Best of luck finding her a new forever home!!

  2. It’s actually not that uncommon for a cat to return home and they might even be underway much longer. Some good advice for next time you place her is to agree with the new owners to keep her inside for the first month. This way she will get used to her new home and see that as a base before discovering the new neighbour hood. If they let her out right away or even after a couple of days she will still think of your house as home and make a go for that (even if you’re not there anymore). Cats are stubborn little things 🙂

  3. Wow! What an amazing cat. 🙂 I’m glad you get to enjoy her for a little bit longer! I hope the girls are able to let her go again.

I agree with Cille… cats are stubborn little things. 😉
